Coarctation of the aorta: is one of the most common obstructive lesions found in children
Congenital narrowing of the aorta, usually located just distal to the left subclavian artery( LSCA), causing upper-extremity hypertension, excess left ventricular workload, and diminished blood flow to the lower extremities and abdominal viscera

The clinical presentation of the child with coarctation depends on the severity of stenosis and whether or not the blood flow to the lower extremities is dependent on the ductus arteriosus
Clinical features:
Bp is raised in the upper body but normal or low in the legs.
The femoral pulses are weak and delayed in comparison with radial pulse .
Systolic murmur is usually heard posteriorly over the coarctation .
CXR may show changes in the contour of the aorta and notching of the under-surfaces of the ribs (from collateral vessels development)
Treatment :
Treatment is usually surgical, although percutaneous catheter balloon with
stent dilatation is now a viable option for many patients.

Essential practice of surgery, dividson
